Meal Program Internship
with
The Nashville Food Project
The Nashville Food Project (TNFP) operates out of two kitchens to prepare 3000 weekly meals and snacks
using food grown in our urban gardens, reclaimed from local stores and farmers markets and donated by
farmers. Along with volunteers we prepare and share nutritious, made-from-scratch meals in our community.
The primary purpose of our internship program is to provide meaningful, hands-on experience, helping
students learn through real-world projects and assignments. Interns build job-readiness skills, develop
leadership and group facilitation skills, enhance their knowledge of and skills in nutrition and food justice
issues, and contribute meaningfully to the organization.
The Nashville Food Project offers an unpaid Internship in our Meal Program for a student who meets the
following criteria:
 Available a minimum of 10 hours per week up to a maximum of 32 hours
 Available during weekday hours (preferably between 9am-5pm) for one full semester
 Rank of college freshman or above
 Willing to put forth best effort in all situations
Meal Program Interns work under the supervision of our Kitchen Managers. Interns can expect to gain
experience in:
 Menu planning including recipe testing
 Sustainability practices including food reclamation and gleaning
 Understanding processes and requirements of large capacity meal preparation
 Special event assistance such as catering opportunities
 Enhancing knowledge of Nashville’s local food justice movement via interaction with area farmers,
farmers markets/vendors, and nonprofits
 Volunteer and group facilitation skills
 Insight into nonprofit organizational management
Interns will spend the majority of their time working in our kitchens but are also expected to propose and
complete one independent work project relevant to the meal program. The project will be chosen by the intern
with approval by the meal team. The project is to be completed within the duration of the internship.
Interested students should send a resume and cover letter to Malinda Hersh, Associate Director at
[email protected].
The Nashville Food Project is a vibrant not-for-profit, with main offices located in Green Hills. Our mission is to
bring people together to grow, cook, and share nourishing food with the goals of cultivating community and
alleviating hunger in our city. Over 100,000 people in Davidson County lack access to enough food to obtain and
sustain a healthy lifestyle. The interconnected issues of poverty, low wages, unemployment as well as rising costs
of food and living all contribute to the growing food insecurity rates in our city.
