Position Description Director of Engineering, KRPS Public Radio Pittsburg State University KRPS Public Radio seeks a Director of Engineering to maintain all aspects of radio broadcast engineering; including planning, installation, maintenance, repairs and compliance with FCC regulations. The Director of Engineering for KRPS is responsible for the technical maintenance of the broadcast, production and transmission systems necessary to operate the FM broadcast facility and its ancillary services. The Engineer is responsible for ensuring the facility operates within technical parameters and delivers an audio signal of high technical quality on equipment kept in good technical repair. The Engineer reports to the General Manager, KRPS. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Actively maintain the KRPS broadcast, production and transmitter facilities to ensure operation is within FCC requirements and guidelines. Competently troubleshoot analog, digital and RF systems without requiring a high level of supervision or assistance. Display competency in the use of recording, production and editing equipment to assist KRPS production staff in creating audio programs for broadcast. Install, maintain, repair, operate and troubleshoot computer hardware and software applications in broadcast, production, satellite, audio storage, automation, and remote control and transmission systems. Set up, maintain and operate digital audio systems. Establish guidelines for and maintain high quality standards on any technical service work performed within the facility, including that performed by others, including independent contractors. Develop and maintain maintenance and repair record for all KRPS equipment. Ensure KRPS’ main broadcast signals and other ancillary audio services are of the highest quality possible. Coordinate and track trouble reports including follow-up with other staff, contractors and vendors, to record progress reports to supervisor. Communicate with trouble report stakeholders to provide timely status and feedback on their requests. Assist in developing and maintaining a master engineering project list and long range plan. Track progress and priority of each item falling under Engineer’s area of responsibility. Prepare all necessary documents, reports and exhibits necessary for Federal, State and private grant applications and other reporting requirements. Seek additional training as necessary to develop an expertise with new equipment and other advances in broadcast applications and audio management. Accept direction from supervisor and take responsibility for setting and recommending to the supervisor priorities for daily and routine work. Plan and estimate timelines and budgets for and actively manage projects, maintenance, repairs and upgrades relative to KRPS studios and transmission facilities. Organize the Engineering Shop, maintain spare parts, tools and equipment inventory. Assist KRPS programming and production staff in production of special studio or remote broadcasts, live or recorded, as required. Participate with other staff in preparing and implementing orientation and training for KRPS staff, relative to proper equipment operation and notification of engineering problems in studio and transmission systems. Provide periodic training for KRPS staff in the use and operation of KRPS equipment used for recording, production, broadcast, and audio storage of program materials. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Computer literate. Ability to efficiently complete assignments within a reasonable amount of time, independently determine and set priorities and effectively manage work schedule to produce measurable and valuable results; Ability to plan, determine costs for and direct a project, including planning and appropriate and complete documentation, directing contractors and follow-up; Effective communication and organization skills, written and oral; Ability to maintain a professional, positive attitude and be a strong team contributor with a commitment to excellence and ability to work successfully and cooperatively with a diverse staff and clientele. Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated experience in an engineering position in broadcasting; Knowledge of analog and digital FM RF plants, including planning, building, maintenance and testing, and strong working knowledge of basic analog and digital circuit design; SBE certification at the Broadcast Technician or CBNT level or equivalent; Technical skills in the areas of troubleshooting, maintenance, installation and operation of broadcast and production equipment, including computing, audio processing, STL, Internet and RF transmission equipment; Computer literate with set up and installation experience, digital audio skills including understanding of digital sound file acquisition, delivery and storage, computer networking, configuration and setup. Salary: Exempt, $38,000 to $45,000 annually, depending on experience, with a competitive benefit plan.
