“Matters of Health”
An initiative supported by sanofi-aventis, under the patronage of the French Embassy in
Bulgaria and fully supported by the Bulgarian Ministry of Health
1. The communication challenge
Sanofi-aventis is a multinational pharmaceutical company, fourth-largest by prescription
sales. Recently they acquired Zentiva, an international pharmaceutical company focused on
developing, manufacturing and marketing modern generic pharmaceutical products.
This acquisition made sanofi-aventis the №1 leader in the pharmaceutical sector in Europe
and Bulgaria.
As a leader, sanofi-aventis engaged in this social responsibility campaign which aims to bring
European know how to Bulgaria, raise brand awareness, improve the media communication
of the company, and of course gain some good media coverage.
2. The idea of the project
The principle is to create an initiative (Matters of Health) gathering 200 major players, key
opinion leaders of the Bulgarian Healthcare system to debate on healthcare issues. Our
ambition is to act as a think tank on important healthcare issues by creating and sustaining
debates
Creating debates:
Organization of Round Tables with multi-angle perspectives
Production of High-level updates and analysis
Sustaining debates:
Dissemination of round tables conclusions
Creation of a social network among the members of the initiative
Our goal is to build is to build an active partnership between Healthcare stakeholders in
Bulgaria by creating a platform stimulating the exchange of ideas
3. Implementation of the project
A. The Round Tables
The project started in September, and our first step was to define the concept of the round
tables.
We decided it was best to gather the media and the key opinion leaders of the healthcare
sector, two to three times a year.
Each round table gathers Bulgarian and European Experts who analyze an issue from different
angles:
Analysis of the Bulgarian situation, presented by a Matters of Health expert
committee
Case study of an EU country considered as Benchmark, presented by high-profile
experts from that country
Member of the European Parliament/Commission, who presents how we handle
the problem on European level
In 2010 SA will organize 3 round table with the following subjects:
January 28th, 2010: Private and Public funding, how to combine them for a better
access to treatment
June 15th, 2010: Hospital healthcare organization
October: not defined yet
B. The Expert Committee
Once we defined the criteria we started to search for adequate experts who could give an
accurate presentation of the Bulgarian Healthcare hot topics.
We selected:
Prof. Grigor Gortchev MD: personal advisor of the Bulgarian President
Mr. Ivan Kostov MD: General Manager of the leading maternity hospital Sheinovo
Ms. Boriana Dimitrova: sociological expert, managing partner of Alpha Research
C. The Website
In December 2009, we launched the official website www.mattersofhealth.eu whose purpose
is to sustain the debates created during the round tables, and reinforcing the feeling of
belonging to one community.
The website is exclusively for the use of the key opinion leaders invited to the round tables.
Its purpose is to extend the discussions created during the round tables on various topics.
The website contains a short description of the project and events, the presentations of the
experts, interesting publications and a blog for the exchange of comments and articles.
4. Efficiency & Achievements
December 8th, 2009: Launch event of the initiative
To mark the launch of the initiative we organized a press conference and a cocktail for the key
