COURSE OUTLINE Title: Advanced Cardiac Emergencies Course Number: HPD-130 Credits: 1 Date: 01/18/2006 Institution: Clackamas Community College Outline Developed by: Merlin Curry Type of Program: Professional/Technical Course Description: Develops skills at the provider level in accordance with American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support guidelines. Successful completion of the course and all required AHA tests lead to certification as an AHA ACLS Provider. Course Objectives: ACE is designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest. Providers are expected to learn to manage 10 core ACLS cases: a respiratory emergency, four types of cardiac arrest (simple VF/VT, complex VF/VT, PEA, and asystole), four types of pre-arrest emergencies (bradycardia, stable tachycardia, unstable tachycardia, and acute coronary syndromes), and stroke. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to demonstrate competency in the management, at the advanced provider level, of the first ten minutes of a ventricular fibrillation type cardiac arrest. Length of Course: 33 lecture/lab hours Grading Method: A-F Prerequisites: None Required Text: AHA ACLS Provider textbook. Major Topic Outline: 1. Pulmonary edema/congestive heart failure 2. Simple VF/VT cardiac arrest 3. Complex VF/VT cardiac arrest 4. PEA cardiac arrest 5. Asystole cardiac arrest 6. Bradycardia 7. Stable tachycardia 8. Unstable tachycardia 9. Acute coronary syndromes 10. Cerebrovascular syndromes I:\Course Outlines & Syllabi\HPD Healthcare Professoinal Development\HPD 130\HPD 130 Advanced Cardiac Emergencies.W-06.doc
