What is the Circulatory
System?
SYSTEM


Is a group of a smaller parts working together to
get a job done
Example:
BODY’S TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
Body’s transportation system=circulatory system
 Moves food & oxygen  each cell
 Takes away cell’s wastes
 Includes:Heart
Blood
Blood vessels

BLOOD
Blood
Plasma
RBC
WBC
Platelets
PLASMA
Liquid & Biggest part of your blood – makes up a
little more than half of the blood
 Carries food to cells. Example: cells depend on
blood’s plasma to carry food & water to them &
carries waste away.
 It also carries adrenaline – a chemical  your
heart & muscles

What’s the color of your blood ?
Green ?
Blue ?
Yellow ?
RED BLOOD CELLS (RBCS)
Cells need oxygen to get energy from food
Red blood cells carry oxygen
Color: Bright light when they are carrying oxygen
Dark red after they give the oxygen

WHITE BLOOD CELLS
Protect your body against germs and harmful things
HOW?
1. Wrap around and break down germs
2. Make chemicals that kills germs

When body needs to fight infection
More or Less WBCs ? MORE
 Their number always change
PLATELETS
WBCs and Platelets make a very small fraction of the
blood change
 They are pieces of cells that float in the blood
1. When you get a wound, platelets clump together at the
wound or cut to stop the bleeding

TYPES OF BLOOD CELLS
RBCs
WBCs
Platelets
Form
Discs with a
dimple on each
side
Change size and
shape as they
work.
Not
complete
cells
Function
Carry oxygen to Protect your
the rest of the
body from germs
body
and other
harmful things.
Form blood
clots
Disorder
Sickle anemiaa disease where
RBCs have a
shape of a
crescent moon
and they DO
NOT carry
oxygen
anymore.
Might form
an
embolism if
it moves
and block a
blood vessel
In a type of cancer
known as
leukemia WBCs
do not form
correctly and their
numbers increase
BLOOD VESSELS

Are thought of as highway your blood uses to
move through your body.
KIND OF BLOOD VESSELS
Blood
vessels
Arteries
Capillaries
Veins
ARTERIES
Blood vessels that carry blood AWAY from your
Heart
 Have thick, muscular walls that stretch when
heart pushes blood
 Branch into smaller and smaller tubes

CAPPILARIES
Smallest kind of blood vessels- Connect arteries & veins
 If you put them side by side 10 of these make one hair
Gases can pass through their walls
Oxygen : from BloodCapillariesCells
CO2 and waste: Cells Capillaries Blood

VEINS
Blood vessels that carry blood FROM cells to the
Heart
VALVES
Veins
have Valves. But Arteries and capillaries Do not
They are flaps that act like “Doors” to keep blood flowing
in one direction.
Valve opens  when blood flows to the Heart
Valve close when blood flow away from the Heart
PARTS OF HEART

The Heart is made up of 2 sides.
Heart
Right
side
Left
side
PARTS OF HEART
Right Side Pumps blood to lungs (to get oxygen
and release CO2).
Then, to the :
 Left Side which Pumps blood through arteries
to the body.

PARTS OF HEART
Right Side Made up of 2 parts:
1. Upper part atrium
2. Lower part ventricle
Left Side Made up of 2 parts:
1. Upper part atrium
2. Lower part ventricle
Ventricle is larger & more powerful than Atrium
JOURNEY OF THE BLOOD
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Blood containing wastes & CO2 flows from
body  right atrium
Right atrium contracts *squeezes blood*right
ventricle
Right ventricle contracts*pumping
blood*artery  lungs
Blood containing oxygen flows in veins from
lungs  left atrium
Goes to the body through the left ventricle
