Circulatory System Notes The Circulatory System is made up of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. The three types of blood vessels are veins, arteries, and capillaries. The heart is the major organ of the Circulatory System. The heart is actually a special kind of muscle that never fatigues (tires) called the cardiac muscle. The veins lead into the heart. The arteries lead out of the heart. Capillaries are so small that red blood cells must travel through them single file. Blood is comprised of red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the lungs and body. White blood cells fight infection. Plasma makes up more than 50% of blood. Platelets aid in clotting the blood. The heart has four chambers…right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle The lub dub sounds you hear when you listen to your heartbeat is actually the valves opening and closing. Hemoglobin helps transport oxygen in red blood cells. There is about 5 liters of blood in the average human adult.
