The Circulatory System
What goes around, comes around
Circulatory System (on sheet, not “notes”)
Organ System
Function
Organs/Parts
Circulatory system
• To move nutrients,
hormones and gases
around the body
• Heart
• Blood vessels
Hemoglobin (not notes)
• Red blood cells carry a protein called “hemoglobin”
• Hemoglobin binds O2 so that can be carried to where it needs to be
• It contains iron, making iron important in your diet
You will often see the circulatory system
presented like this, showing the major
veins and arteries…
…but the circulatory system goes
EVERYWHERE, using smaller and smaller
blood vessels to reach all parts of the body
Back out to body
Heart (notes)
To left lung
To right lung
• Has four “chambers” it uses to pump
• One-way valves keep the blood from
flowing backward

From the body
Heart attack (not notes)
• The heart is a muscle and needs oxygen and nutrients
• If these blood vessels become blocked the heart muscle begins to die
• Because the body isn’t
used to receiving pain
signals from the heart, it
can misinterpret them as
pain from the arm
Types of Blood Vessels (notes)
• “Blood vessel” is anything that carries blood
• An artery is a vessel that carries blood away from the
heart. We color it red.
• A vein is a vessel that carries blood to the heart. We
color it blue.
• A capillary is a small blood vessel of any type.
Arteries are red
Veins are blue
This is a cute poem
But entirely not true
(not notes)
• Blood in veins is a darker red, but is not blue
• It appears blue because of the way light penetrates the skin
• If you ever see a vein colored blue in a picture, that is only for clarity
“Cardiovascular System” (notes)
• The name for the respiratory and circulatory systems combined
