Chapter 8 – Your Body Systems
Lesson 5 – The Circulatory System
artery
a blood vessel that carries blood
away from the heart
vein
a blood vessel that carries blood
to the heart
capillary
a tiny blood vessel that carries blood
from arteries to veins
The blood carries nutrients from the small intestine to the rest of the
body. The blood also carries away waste resulting form the cellular
processing of nutrients.
Blood
• blood is made of the following:
- plasma
- red blood cells
- white blood cells
- platelets
• arteries carry blood away from
the heart to various organs
• veins carry blood from various
parts of the body back to the
heart
• Capillaries are very small tubes
that connect arteries and veins.
Some capillaries are so small you
need a microscope to see them.

• the heart muscle contracts to
pump blood through the blood
vessels
• the heart has four chambers
- 2 upper (right and left
atrium)
- 2 lower (right and left
ventricle)
