Circulatory System Vocabulary
FOLDABLE
BLOOD
• A tissue made of plasma, red and white blood cells
and platelets; carries nutrients to all parts of your
body
blood vessel
• hollow tubes that transport blood throughout the
body; there are 3 kind-veins, arteries & capillaries
PLASMA
• The liquid part of blood made mostly of water
RED BLOOD CELLS
• Supply your body with oxygen
WHITE BLOOD CELLS
• Blood cells that fight infection
PLATELETS
• Irregularly shaped cell fragments that help clot
blood
CLOT
• Plug that stops bleeding or clogs a wounded blood
vessel, forms a scab and skin cells repair
themselves underneath
HEMOGLOBIN
• Chemical in red blood cells that carries oxygen
from lungs to body; and carbon dioxide from body
back to lungs
BLOOD TYPE
• Classification of blood based on the presence or
absence of a certain substance
• A, AB,B, O
CIRCULATION
• Transportation of blood and nutrients through the
body
HEART
• An organ made of cardiac muscle tissue,
responsible for pumping blood
ATRIUM
• Two upper chambers of the heart
VENTRICLE
• Two lower chambers of the heart
VALVE
• Prevent blood from flowing backwards….usually
found in veins, also found between the atrium and
ventricle
AORTA
• blood vessel in which the blood leaves the heart to
go to all parts of your body
VENA CAVA
• Two veins that bring blood back to the heart from
your body
• Superior Vena Cava-brings blood from upper body
• Inferior Vena Cava-brings blood from lower body
PULMONARY ARTERY
• Carries blood from heart to lungs; only artery to
carry oxygen poor blood
PULMONARY VEIN
• Carries blood from lungs to heart; only vein to
carry oxygen rich blood
VEIN
• Blood vessels that carry blood to the heart; usually
carry oxygen poor blood (blue)
ARTERY
• Blood vessels that carry blood away from heart;
usually carry oxygen rich blood (red)
CAPILLARY
• Microscopic blood vessels that connect arteries
and veins
