CHAPTER 1 variable a letter used to represent a number. coefficient the number which is before a variable. If there is no number in front of the variable it is always 1. constant the same number used for the variable. evaluate to solve. algebraic expression an equation which uses both number and letters. numerical expression an equation which has only numbers. multiplicative inverse reciprocal. solution the answer. solution set all the solutions to an inequality. inequality compares 2 quantities and uses <, >, < , > , = term parts to be added or subtracted, a variable or # in a sequence. Ex. like term terms with the same variables and exponents. ex. equivalent expression has the same value for all similar variables. Ordered pair the two numbers, written in parenthesis, used to plot a point on the coordinate plane. (x,y) input the number used for x; output the number used for y coordinate plane is two number lines that includes both positive and negative numbers. The two number lines are called axes. x axis is the horizontal line and the y axis is the vertical line. Origin the point at which the x and y axis intersect. It's location is 0. Coordinates the numbers in the ordered pair. Quadrants the coordinate plane is divided into 4 quadrants. absolute value the distance a number is from zero. / / is the symbol for absolute value. base the whole number. exponent show how many times a number is multiplied. exponential form how it is written as multiplication. power the term used for a number raised to an exponent. real numbers consist of all rational and irrational #'s reciprocal (multiplicative inverse) when the numerator and denominator are switched. additive inverse a number and its opposite Natural #'s the counting numbers starting with 1. Whole #'s the natural #'s plus zero. Integers all the whole #'s and their opposites. Rational #'s can be written in the form of a fraction or decimal. terminating decimals decimals that end. repeating decimals decimal numbers that repeat in a pattern and are symbolized by bar notation. Irrational #'s decimal numbers that never end.
