NEPTUNE
What does Neptune look like?
The particles of icy methane in the clouds takes orange and red light waves and absorbs
them, which leaves blue light waves to make an escape and create an outward reflection
through our eyes. This is the process of how the sunlight is being reflected off to the
atmosphere of the planet Neptune that causes its blue appearance
Have we explored Neptune?
 the only spacecraft to visit Neptune was
Voyager 2, which flew by the giant planet in
1989. Voyager 2, which has traveled to more
planets than any other probe in history,
probably still will be operating as the new
probe arrives at Neptune
What's Neptune's average
temperature?
 At its surface, where the clouds of the planet
touch space, the temperature of Neptune can
dip down to 55 Kelvin. That's -218 degrees
Celsius. The average temperature of Neptune
is 73 K (-200 Celsius)
What's Neptune's atmosphere
like?
 The atmosphere of Neptune is similar to all
the large planets in the Solar System; it
mostly consists of hydrogen and helium, with
trace amounts of methane, water, ammonia
and other ices.
How many moons does Neptune
have?
 Neptune has thirteen moons that we know of
with one more waiting for confirmation. The
largest moon is Triton. Triton is slightly smaller
than Earth's Moon and has active volcanoes
which erupt like geysers and eject nitrogen frost
over the surface. Some of the other moons of
Neptune are Nereid, Proteus, Larissa, Despina,
Galatea, Thalassa, and Naiad. These moons are
much smaller than Triton and, except for Nereid,
were not discovered until the Voyager spacecraft
flew by them in 1989.
Is Neptune named after a roman
god?
 Neptune was the name that ancient Romans
gave to the Greek god of the sea and
earthquakes, Poseidon.
How far away is Neptune from
the sun?
Neptune is 2.795 billion million miles away
from
the sun. Neptune is the eighth and farthest
known planet from the Sun in the Solar System
How long does it take Neptune
to orbit the Sun?
 Neptune orbits much further away from the
Sun than the Earth, so its orbit takes much
longer. In fact, Neptune takes 164.79 years to
orbit around the Sun. That’s almost 165 times
longer than Earth takes to orbit the Sun.
How big is Neptune?
 Of the four giant planets, Neptune is the
smallest. Its diameter is roughly 30, 755 miles.
This is the measurement taken from a point
in the atmosphere where the pressure does
not exceed 1 bar. Neptune is four times
bigger than earth but is just slightly smaller
than Uranus.
