Expelled Athenian leader Hippias persuades Persian Emperor Darius I to attack Athens. Darius sends a fleet of 600 ships to Marathon Bay BATTLE OF MARATHON 11,000 Greeks (Led by Athens) versus 30,000 Persians Sparta was not at the battle Persians send 18,000 Persians onto ships to attack Athens while army is at Marathon Greeks defeat remaining Persians at Marathon. 160 dead Greeks compared to 6,000 dead Persians.
