THE EVACUATION OF ATHENS
2
months after the death of King Leonidas
and the Spartans at Thermopylae,
Themistocles, the leader of the Athenian
Navy orders the city to be evacuated
 The
people of Athens boarded ships and
sailed for nearby islands while very few
remained in the city
 Xerxes
finally succeeds and burns Athens
to the ground
THEMISTOCLES GETS TRICKY
 Themistocles
believes that he can defeat
the Persians if he is able to lure them into
the narrow channels of water at Salamis
in order to reduce the number of Persian
ships attacking at once
 He
sends a servant to Xerxes posing as a
traitor telling him that if the Persians
attack right now, half of the Greeks
would immediately surrender
THE BATTLE OF SALAMIS
 Xerxes
takes the bait and sends in the
Persian navy into the narrow channels
of Salamis
 The
Greeks seemed to retreat at first,
but once the Persians were
completely in the channels, the
Greeks surrounded them
 At
a cost of 40 Greek ships, the Greeks
are able to destroy 300 Persian ships
 This
was the second major victory for
the Greeks in the Persian War
