4.8A Weather Vocabulary
Sunlight passes through the air but does not heat the air. Energy from the
sun heats the solids and liquids on the Earth’s surface.
Surface Temperature – Different surfaces absorb different amounts of the
sun’s energy.
Air Temperature – The air is heated by the sun’s light energy warming the
solids and liquids on the Earth’s surface.
Air Pressure – The amount that air presses or pushes on anything.
Low-Pressure Area – A place where warm air rises and pushes down less.
High-Pressure Area – A place where cool air sinks and pushes down more.
Wind – Moving air caused by uneven heating.
Barometer - A tool that measures air pressure.
Wind Vane or Wind Sock – A tool that shows wind direction.
Precipitation - Moisture that falls from the clouds to the ground.
Humidity - The amount of water vapor or moisture in the air.
Anemometer – A tool that measures wind speed.
Rain Gauge - A tool that measures precipitation.
Hygrometer – A tool that measure humidity.
Air Mass – A large body of air with about the same temperature & humidity.
Front – The line where two air masses meet.
Forecast – A prediction of what the weather will be like.
Meteorologist – A scientist who studies weather.
Storm Watch – The conditions are right for producing severe weather.
Storm Warning – Severe weather conditions are spotted in the area.
