Lesson # 48
1. Enduring Understanding: An entity’s structure often reveals its function. This principle applies to different
types of cells as well as the components of the cells themselves.
Many entities are made up of smaller units. Entities (cells e.g.) are made of smaller units (organelles, e.g.)
whose characteristics are reflected in the larger entity.
Goals & Objectives: Students will understand:
How to relate specialized cell function to cell structure.
How to differentiate between plant and animal cells.
How to explain functional relationships between selected organelles/structures.
The functional relationships between selected organelles/ structures.
3. Guiding Question: To what extent is cell structure related to its function?
4. Assessment: Responses on Guess who ? from yearbook activity. Q&A and teacher observation on cell parts
and job worksheet.
5. 21st Century Competencies: Effective communicator, problem solver.
6. Activities: Read some guess who yearbook signings to assess whether the students understand function of
organelle and their relationship to other organelles. Collect yearbook chart and review cell parts with
worksheet. Introduce analogy project and work on widget/cell analogy worksheet.
7. Homework: Matching-organelle to function.

1. Enduring Understanding: Many entities are made up of smaller units. Entities (cells e.g.) are made of
smaller units (organelles, e.g.) whose characteristics are reflected in the larger entity.
2.Goals & Objectives:. Students will be able to explain functional relationships between selected
organelles/structures through the use of analogies.
3. Guiding Question:? How is the whole more than the sum of its parts?
4. Assessment: Teacher observation and Q& A during work period.
5. 21st Century Competencies: Collaborative team member, effective communicator.
6. Activities: Have students fill in scantron with answers from HW. Grade for accuracy.
Cell analogy work period.
7. Homework: Finish Cell analogy project. Read text to reinforce cellular structures and functions.
Lesson # 50:

2. Goals & Objectives: Students will be able to:
Differentiate between plant and animal cells.
Differentiate between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.
Relate specialized cell function to cell structure.
3. Guiding Question: Can you identify cell parts and identify the type of cell they belong in?
4. Assessment: Performance during lab and follow up worksheet ?’s.
5. 21st Century Competencies: Problem solver and flexible self- directed learner.
6. Activities:DNP : What organelles or cell parts can you actually see with a microscope ?
Cell lab. Students will be given a plant, cheek and mystery cell to identify based on understanding of structure
and function of plant and animal cells.
7. Homework:
a. Finish post-lab questions.
