Integers
Integers – all whole numbers and their opposites.
Real-world examples of integers:
Elevations:
 Above sea level (such as Mount Rainier in Washington at 14, 410 ft) – positive integers
 Below sea level (such as Death Valley, CA at 282 ft) – negative
Temperatures: above and below zero (78⁰
Money/Checking Account:


and -14⁰ )
deposits – adds money to your account (positive)
withdrawls – take money from your account (negative)
Football:
yardage can be positive or negative
Absolute value: a number’s distance from 0 on the number line
- write it as |-3|
- think … how far is this number from 0?
Operations with Integers Adding Integers:
1. Separate – circle numbers and signs
2. Check signs
(same signs – Add / different signs – Subtract)
3. Take the sign of the BIG BOY
Subtracting Integers:
1. Add the opposite
2. Check signs
(same signs – Add / different signs – Subtract)
3. Take the sign of the BIG BOY
Multiplying or Dividing Integers:
1.
2.
Multiply or divide (without signs)
Check signs
 same signs – the answer is positive
 different signs – the answer is negative
