• Southerners fought for independence, a clear
objective. Northerners fought for less cohesive
objectives. Some fought to preserve the
Union. Some fought to eliminate slavery.
• The South fought a defensive war. Northern
troops had to carry out an offensive invasion.
• The South had a strong military tradition.
Many of the finest U.S. Army and Naval officers
were from Southern states.
• The Federal government had great arsenals
and military bases located in Southern states.
• Southerners believed that Great Britain and
France would provide military assistance
because of their economic dependency on
cotton.
