Chapter 17 Key Points 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Section 1 The North’s goal at the beginning of the war was to keep the Union together. Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederacy. President Lincoln cautiously handled the issue of slavery at the beginning of the War because he wanted the border states to remain with the Union. Northern strengths: Larger free population, factories, strong navy, large merchant fleet Southern strengths: Fought mostly a defensive war, fought for their property, woods to use for cover One of the issues Northerners were forced to deal with during the war was that certain rights were suspended for public safety. Section 2 Shiloh was one of the bloodiest battles of the War. The Battle of Fredericksburg proved to be one of the worst defeats for the Union. General Jackson died after the Battle of Chancellorsville. The Union’s control of the Mississippi River was part of a successful strategy which led to their winning the war. The need for well-trained soldiers was apparent early in the War. Both Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville were Confederate victories. Both the North and South realized early in the War the hope for a brief armed conflict were unrealistic. Section 3 1. The Emancipation Proclamation resulted in the abolition of slavery becoming one of the Union goals to end the war. 2. By 1863 African Americans in the Union army were allowed to fight in battles, many of which were major battles of the War. 3. Many slaves in the South helped the Union war effort by destroying crops and tools, slowing down their work, or refusing to work on the plantations. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Section 4 To deal with economic problems during the War, many southern plantations stopped growing cash crops and grew food crops. Sally Tompkins served as a Confederate nurse during the war. The performance of nurses during the War opened doors of opportunity for women for employment after the War was over. Inflation was a problem for both sides during the War. Disease and infection were more deadly during the War than actual combat. Men who owned more than 20 slaves in the South were not subject to the draft law. This caused feelings of resentment among small farmers. Section 5 The determination of General Grant helped the North to achieve success in the War. After President Lincoln was reelected, he announced that he wanted to work toward peace and unity; he wanted forgiveness to be a part of the peace process. General Grant’s use of total war, destroying anything that might be useful to the enemy, meant that now civilians would be subject to the same hardships as enemy soldiers. By the end of the War, the Union had attained all of its goals. One of the end results of the outcome of the Civil War was the abolition of slavery throughout the United States and the acceptance of the fact that the country was one nation rather than a confederation of independent states. The Battle of Gettysburg fought in Pennsylvania was a Union victory and ended the Confederate invasion of the North. The Battle of Vicksburg fought in Mississippi gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two.
