The 1800’s Northern economy is making
money by keeping it industrial and more people keep
coming for job openings. The Southern economy gets
its money from growing tobacco and more African
AfricanAmericans keep working hard. Some would say this
slavery issue is the start of something BIG, even
some say a WAR!

Richmond became
Capitall of the Confederacy
Virginia became a Confederate State
and left the Union. A big chunk of Virginia
wanted slaves because of the climate. The
western part of Virginia broke off because
they did not need slaves. This affects the
war because it gives the Confederates a
better chance of winning the war, a new
capital and new generals.
~Nathan
Bull Run
Stonewall Jackson and the
Confederates win the Battle of Manassas or
Bull Run! People thought the battle would be
a family event but they soon came to know it
wasn’t. Out of 35,000 Union soldiers, 460
killed, 1,124 wounded, 1,312 captured or
missing. While
ile the Confederate soldiers had
34,000 men, 387 died,, and 1582 wounded.
Confederates start to call General Jackson,
“Stonewall Jackson,” after they see him
standing like a stone wall at this historic
battle.

Cumberland Gap into western Virginia looking
for new land opportunities. In western
Virginia, people mined iron, raised wheat, and
herded sheep. They didn’t need any slaves
so they disagreed over slavery. That’s how
Virginia broke apart and became the state
of West Virginia.

Slaves FREED!
Slaves are free and fleeing
everywhere to join the invading northern
states. This has happened because of the
Emancipation Proclamation. It was drafted
and published by Abraham Lincoln. Also it is
the most important document of the Civil
War because it freed all slaves from owners
except slaves that wanted to stay.
Hopefully, this is the final end to slavery!

The Battle of Chancellorsville
Stonewall Jackson was at home with
his wife and daughter when he received a
note. He had to go to Chancellorsville. While
on his way, he was mistaken for a Union

Grant at the Appomattox Court House,
ready to surrender. Grant, being a gracious
winner, lets Lee keep his horse, Traveler,

Mrs. Bolton’s 5th graders researched
the Civil War as a timeline of events.
Students chose an important date and
researched it. They drew a picture
that you might have seen in a
newspaper at the time. They wrote a
newspaper article that had at least 3
facts.
Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant,
officer of the Federal Army
Gen. Robert E. Lee,
officer of the Confederate Army
