FILM TITLE: Maya the Bee: Dancing with Bees
ACTIVITY TITLE: Using Microscopes to observe insects’ parts.
Type of Activity: Experiment
Age Group Orientation: Ages 10+
Number of Participants: 25 – need to work individually/in pairs or
families
Subject: Insects
Materials: living insects (in glass jars), Magnifying lenses or Microscope, crayons
or colored pencils, white papers.
Procedure:
Students will use their observations of different types of insects to develop
understanding of the parts of an insect.
1. Before the activity collect insects from different places in your garden.
2. Teach the students how to use the microscope/Magnifier (put the lens
close to your eye and move the object back and forth).
3. Students should look at the insects and then draw three of the insects they
watch. Encourage students to include all the details they notice (legs, body
parts, wings, etc.)
Explanation:
Insects come in many sizes, shapes, and colors. They all share two main
characteristics: three main body parts and six legs. Insects use their
legs to run, walk, jump, dig, and even sing!
