Mendel wanted to figure out if traits are inherited together or if they are inherited independently.
Law: When gametes are formed, the alleles of a gene for one trait segregate independently of the alleles of a gene for another trait.

In order for this law to hold true the two genes must be located on separate chromosomes.
If 2 genes are linked on the same chromosome the law does not hold true. However, 2 genes can be so far apart on a chromosome that crossing over leads to the "look" that they are on separate chromosomes.
