Phrase: a group of related words missing a subject, predicate, or both.

Clause: a group of related words containing a subject and predicate.

Two kinds of clauses (both have subject and predicate):
Independent Clause: A clause (subject and predicate) that makes sense on its own; it does not require additional information to complete a thought.

Dependent (or subordinate) Clause: A clause (subject and predicate) that DOES NOT MAKE SENSE on its own­­it depends on an independent clause to complete a thought. Begins with EITHER a relative pronoun, such as that, which or who, OR a subordinating conjunction, such as: if, after, when, because, although, since, where, even though, as, while, before...

Dependent (or subordinate) Clause: A clause (subject and predicate) that DOES NOT MAKE SENSE on its own­­it depends on an independent clause to complete a thought. Begins with EITHER a relative pronoun, such as that, which or who, OR a subordinating conjunction, such as: if, after, when, because, although, since, where, even though, as, while, before...
Relative Pronouns: There are only 3; always the subject of a dependent clause.
