11/11/2016 WHAT IS AN INTERACTIVE WORD WALL? A word wall is a systematically organized collection of words displayed in large letters on a wall or other large display place In the classroom. It is a tool to use, not just a display. Word walls are designed to promote group learning during reading and writing and shared by a classroom of children. (Cunnmgham, 1 9 9 5 ) GOALS OF A WORD WALL Develop a growing core of words that will become a part of the student's reading and writing vocabulary r Support the teaching of important general principles about words and how they work r Fosters reading and writing Provides reference support for children during reading and writing f Promotes independence (Cunningham, 1995) 1 11/11/2016 Exemplars of words on the word wall become the foundation for helping children think about how to use a word they know, to get to words they want to solve.
