Haugen Community Healthcare Society Spirit Train Reflecting Our Past | Painted by Shirley States Compassion Compassion | Painted by Shirley States Haugen Centre Staff-Professional and Caring Facilities We are proud of the Haugen Centre: It is new, bright and one of the most modern in British Columbia. Haugen Community Healthcare Society (HCHS) Rural communities such as ours face major challenges in providing an excellent health care facility. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated doctors and a modern medical centre with such caring, dedicated and knowledgeable staff. Listed below are a few facts about our local doctors’ office: • We currently have 4 full time doctors and 1 part time doctor working at the Haugen Health Centre. This centre is located upstairs at 3300 Smith Drive in Armstrong. • They currently have 7200 patients and provide medical services to 80 local seniors at Pleasant Valley Manor. Also they care for residents in the Assisted Living facilities in Armstrong. • All our doctors [Haugen Medical Group] have admitting privileges at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital [only 30% of local area GP’s have this privilege]. They also care for orphan patients at the hospital when they are on call. • Our doctors provide community [at home] palliative care for end of life patients, as well as home visits when needed. They also work closely with the Armstrong Community Care Team of Healthcare Professionals with the aim of keeping patients at home as long as possible. • Our doctors provide quality care to our residents and maintain a high workload to ensure they serve our community to the best of their ability. Currently our doctors are working at full case load and unfortunately are unable to accommodate new clients at present time. As openings become available, the doctors will be able to accept new clients. • The Healthcare Centre is NOT a walk in clinic, one must make an appointment to see a doctor. • The doctors pay for their staff, equipment, operating costs and building maintenance. • The rent for the Haugen facility is shared by the doctors and the Haugen Community Healthcare Society. • As of December, 2013, the HCHS has reduced their debt to $46,108 for the renovation in creating the facilities [down from $316 000 5 years ago]. The HCHS were able to pay down this large amount thanks to the Armstrong/Spallumcheen Healthcare Auxiliary [Bargain Bin], Askew’s, Shepherd’s, CIBC, fund raising, memberships and general donations by the Armstrong community as a whole. • HCHS has been at it for 5 years and are quite proud of what has been accomplished in that time and the quality of care that 7000 local people get in our community. Many communities at this time are struggling to attract or keep medical services. We Need Your Support An important fact to note is that when the debt for the renovation is retired we still have monthly expenses of $1700. This includes our portion of the rent as well as Common Area costs and Insurance. This is how you can help maintain this level of medical care in Armstrong: • Join the HCHS team, attend our monthly meetings and contribute your ideas and suggestions. • Become a member of the Haugen Community Healthcare Society [HCHS] at only $10 annually. • Make a donation. All donations of $20 or more will receive an income tax receipt. • Send the HCHS a number of post-dated cheques. • Set up with the Valley First Credit Union to have a preauthorized monthly debit payable to the HCHS. • Make an annual donation. • Write a letter of support to a local newspaper. • Support Haugen Community Healthcare Society events and activities. • Bequeath a donation in your last will and testament. Okanagan Advertiser Letter from Mr. Eric Greenwood December 18, 2013 To the Editor, Let’s BE SELFISH, I have just bought a membership in Haugen Community Healthcare Society [HCHS], only ten bucks. I did that because I am selfish. I don’t want to have to drive to Vernon to a walk-in clinic to get needed medical care; it’s so much better going to Armstrong and having my own doctor, that alone is a bargain for $10. My wife died recently, and she decided to have palliative care at home. The support I and my family received was outstanding. Complete nursing care, I would call the nurses angels, except that my nursing friends would never forgive me. My [our] doctor made visits to check on the medical care, this, along with the nursing care gave us family members peace of mind. $10? No beyond value. The HCHS owes $103,000 for the renovations. If each of the 7,000 patients joined the society, the $70,000 would nearly wipe out this debt. So BE SELFISH, pay your $10 and join HCHS. Communities must take an active role in the support of their primary care facility. I support the efforts of the Haugen Health care Society in their endeavours to keep doctors in our community. Enclosed is my cheque made payable to the Haugen Community Healthcare Society.
