Unit C: Biology (Cycling of Matter in Living Systems) – Assignment Answer Key
C3.2 Check and Reflect #1 – 3, 5, 7a, 8
1. Photosynthesis is the process in which the chloroplasts in plant cells convert light energy
into potential chemical energy for later use. It requires chemical reactants water and
carbon dioxide, and creates chemical products glucose and oxygen.
word equation: water + carbon dioxide
chlorophyll + light
glucose + oxygen
chemical equation: 6H2O(l) + 6CO2(g) → C6H12O6(aq) + 6O2(g)
2. The role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis is to absorb light energy and convert it into
potential chemical energy.
3. In sunlight, plants can carry out both photosynthesis and cellular respiration. In the dark,
plants can only carry out cellular respiration as light energy is a requirement for
photosynthesis to occur.
5. Agree. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis and produce glucose and oxygen
from carbon dioxide and water, while mitochondria are the sites of cellular respiration
and produce carbon dioxide and water by breaking down glucose with oxygen.
7. a)
If more carbon dioxide was available, photosynthesis should be able to occur at a
faster rate as long as there was also enough water and sunlight available.
8. Answers may vary. One possible answer: The warmer temperature within the
greenhouse will cause more water to evaporate through the leaves, which will keep
water and nutrients flowing up through the plant at a faster rate.
