High-speed LAN Connectivity
Client: One of the State Government Offices
Customer's Requirement:

The customer wanted to establish Statewide LAN Connectivity
for 35 District Head Quarters, 350 Taluks and State Head
Quarters.
At each DHQ's and Taluk Office, the customer preferred Layer 2
Managed and unmanaged Switches respectively.
At the State Head Quarters, the customer needed Layer 3
Managed Switching solution.
The performance level required is 100 Mbps for all the LAN
nodes in each of the DHQ's and Taluk Offices.
At each DHQ's the network has 2 Servers, which are connected to the Layer 2 Managed
Switch at a Giga Speed.
All the nodes at each of the DHQ's and Taluk Offices are within 100m proximity from the
switch.
If the distance between the node and switch exceeds100m or for connectivity to different
Buildings, then the customer wanted Fibre backbone.
The Connectivity speed between switches at each DHQ's should be of Giga Speed.
The Connectivity speed between switches and servers at each Taluk Office is of 100 Mbps.
The customer also wanted Wireless LAN connectivity option for top Official
Summary of Dax solution:
Dax recommended a structured cabling network with 10/100 Mbps ports for connecting all the
Nodes in the state Head Quarters, 35 District Head Quarters and 350 Taluk Offices.
At the State Head Quarters, Dax recommended 1 no of 8 Port Layer 3 Managed Switch. The switch
has 4-fixed no of 10/100/1000 Mbps Ports and 4 Optional Giga slots for Fiber or Copper
connections. Thus, for backbone connectivity, the recommended switch suits the customer's
requirement.
At each District Head Quarters, Dax recommended 1 no of 24 Port 10/100 Mbps Managed Layer 2
Stackable switch. Based on the no of nodes at each District Head Quarters, the Govt may stack the
required number of switches. As many as 8 Switches can be stacked and managed as a single IP
entity, thereby giving 192 port counts per stack or cluster.
The connectivity between switches and Servers at each District Head Quarter Office is 1000 Mbps.
All the nodes in each of the District head Quarters is connected to the switch at a speed of 100
Mbps.
At each Taluk office, 1 no of 16 Port 10/100 Layer 2 switch was recommended. All the nodes and
the Server in each of the Taluk Office will be connected to the switch at a speed of 100 Mbps.
Dax recommended IEEE 802.11b based Wireless LAN connectivity solution for the top Officials in the
State Head Quarters, District Head Quarters and Taluk Offices.
Each Notebook computer will be equipped with Wireless PCMCIA card. Thus, the Wireless enabled
Notebook PC gets connected to the LAN through Wireless Access Point connected to the Switch.
The desktop nodes requiring Wireless connectivity are connected to the Wireless USB adapter.
Thus, these nodes also get connected to the switch through the Wireless Access Point.
Since Govt of India has de-licensed the usage of IEEE 802.11b devices in an indoor application,
there is no need for any user license to use Dax Wireless products.
Details of Dax Solution:
State Head Quarters:
1 no of Dax DX -5744GS (Layer 3) 8-Port All-Giga SNMP Switch at the State Head Quarters was
recommended. DX -5744GS has 4-fixed 10/100 /1000 Mbps ports and 4 Optional slots for Giga
Copper / Fiber connections.
Dax Megastack switches were recommended for workgroup users. Thus, the entire LAN is a fully
Managed Network in the state Head Quarters, allowing hassle free network maintenance.
At each District Head Quarters:
At each District Head Quarters, Dax Megastack Switch was recommended, which has 24#ports
connecting at a speed of 10/100 Mbps Speed and 2 expansion slots supporting a variety of Gigabit
and 100FX modules.
If the no of nodes at each District Head Quarters exceeds 24, the user could expand by simply
stacking another Megastack switch in the network. As many as 8 switches in a single stack or cluster
is viewed as a single IP entity.
All the Dax Megastack Switches at each District Head Quarter are connected through Gigabit Stack
modules. The 2 servers will be connected to the Megastack switch stack vide Gigabit backbone. Dax
64/32 bit Gigabit server adapters were recommended for the servers.
Dax Megastack supports enhanced features including VLAN, port trunking and Queuing which
improves network performance through effective segmenting and traffic prioritization for nodes
running mission critical applications.
A cluster of up to 8 switches spread across the network is managed as a single IP entity. The switch
management is not limited by the traditional stack policy, where the switches have to be in
proximity to each other. With Dax Megastack, the maximum distance between any two clusters can
even be up to 2 Kms and still viewed as a single IP.
At each Taluk Office:
For each Taluk office, Dax DX -5016PS was recommended, which has 16 ports connecting at a speed
of 10/100 Mbps. If the Taluk office has more than 16 nodes, another DX -5016PS may be connected
by simply attaching it to the network. Thus, the proposed solution is easily scalable.
Inter Building connectivity:
For Inter Building connectivity or if the distance between LAN Switches in any location is more than
100 m, the use of DX -BC-100SC/TX Media converters (Fiber -UTP) was recommended to facilitate
Fiber backbone connectivity. In the offices deploying Megastack & DX -5744GS switches, the user
could use the fiber uplink options available in the switches.
Wireless LAN connectivity for Top officials:
For top officials in the State Government office, Dax recommended DX -910ABO Wireless Bridging
Access Point, which connects the Wireless nodes to the LAN at a speed of 11 Mbps.
DX -910ABO, which is an IEEE 802.11b compliant Access point connects to the LAN switch and allows
easy connection between wired and wireless users in the network. Each DX-910ABO is equipped
with an in -built 2db antenna for extended line of sight coverage in an indoor application.
Each Notebook PC, which requires wireless connectivity, will be attached to DX -900PCM Wireless
PCMCIA adapter. The Desktop Computers use DX -900USB Wireless USB adapters.
Dax Wireless PCMCIA adapter, Dax Wireless USB adapter and Dax Access points comply with IEEE
802.11b. Standards and they operate at 2.4 GHz frequency, which is de -licensed by Govt of India
for use within the premises defined by the user.
The MAC addresses of the Wireless nodes can be configured in the Access points to enable secured
connectivity and any intruders can be denied access to the network by virtue of MAC address based
filtering.
Highlights of Dax solution:
Scalability:
The proposed switches are capable of handling additional nodes by simply cascading another switch
to it. Thus, in future network expansion is hassle free without any change in the existing setup.
Supports Auto MDI / MDX on all 10/100 ports:
Dax switches support connectivity to all the ports using straight cables, as the switches have Auto
MDI / MDX feature on all 10/100 Mbps ports. With all ports supporting both normal and uplink
mode, there is no hassle of using cross -- cables or exclusive uplink ports for connecting to another
switch, thus ensuring peace of mind.
Effective network traffic regulation:
By implementing VLAN in Dax Megastack and DX -5744GS, the broadcast traffic is restricted to
specified workgroup. As a result, the broadcast traffic of a single segment does not reach another
segment. This reduces the collision between domains and the network traffic gets regulated.
Megastack supports up to 128 VLAN groups and DX -5744GS supports 256 Groups.
Support for VLAN and QOS in Giga Ethernet Cards:
DX -2064T Gigabit Ethernet server adapter supports VLAN functions when connected to a VLAN of
the Dax Megastack Switch. Thus, the user gets additional Security through port based VLAN
available through the switch and MAC based VLAN available through the DX -2064T Ethernet cards.
Comprehensive Cluster management:
With support for Cluster management, up to 8 Dax Megastack Switches in a stack (or cascaded) is
viewed as a single IP entity, enabling VLAN grouping and redundant links configuration between the
switches from any web browser.
A cluster of up to 8 switches spread across the network is managed as a single IP entity. The switch
management is not limited by the traditional stack policy, where the switches have to be in
proximity to each other. With Dax Megastack, the maximum distance between any two clusters can
even be up to 2 Kms and still viewed as a single IP.
Support for 802.1q Priority Queuing in Giga Ethernet Cards:
Dax DX -2064T Supports Priority queuing feature when connected to the Dax Megastack and DX 5744GS Switch supporting 802.1q, the QOS features for more effective and appropriate bandwidth
is reserved for nodes which run time sensitive applications which require bandwidth at specific
time intervals such as Video conferencing Voice chat etc.
In -built Routing function in the Switches:
Software routing feature is integrated in DAX Megastack as a standard offering. With this, the user
has the choice of segmenting the network based on IP address as well, which is not otherwise
possible in a plain Layer 2 switch. Supported IP routing protocols include RIP1, RIP2 as well as
Static Routing.
DX -5744GS Supports Hardware Routing through its Layer 3 Management Features. It offers several
Routing Protocols such as RIP, RIP2 and DVMRP and OSPF, ensuring effective segmentation of the
network based on IP addresses.
In -built web based configuration and Management software:
The in -built in web based management software enables easy configuration of Dax Megastack and
DX --5744GS switches from any PC running a web browser. Thus, the configuration solution is
operating system independent.
Use of 2.4 GHz de-licensed frequency band for Wireless connectivity:
DX -910ABO supports IEEE802.11b and uses the de -licensed 2.4 GHz frequency band. Since the
deployment of these wireless products is within the customer premises, there is no need for any
user license to use the product.
Secured Wireless solution:
In each Wireless Access point, the Wireless nodes can be restricted based on the MAC addresses.
This prevents any intruder from accessing the network. Apart from this 64 bit / 128 bit encryption
may also be implemented for enhanced data security.
