Chapter 1 Notes for Earth Science Sun and Planets -Earth revolves, or travels around, the sun. -It takes on year to revolve once around the sun. -The path Earth takes around the sun is its orbit. -Inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. -Outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. -Inner planets are smaller and made of rock. -Outer planets are bigger and made of gasses. Day and Night -Earth rotates, or spins, on its axis. -It takes 24 hours for the Earth to rotate one time. -The Earth’s rotation causes day and night. -When we face the sun, it is day. -When we are not facing the sun, it is night. -Because Earth never stops rotating, it looks like the sun is moving. -The sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west. -When the sun is low in the sky, like in the morning and late afternoon, your shadow will be long. -In the morning, your shadow will stretch to the west. -In the afternoon, your shadow will stretch to the east. -When the sun is high in the sky, like at 12:00 noon, your shadow will be short. Earth and Moon -The moon is Earth’s closest neighbor. -The moon revolves around Earth. -The moon is much smaller than Earth. -A satellite is a smaller object that orbits a larger object. -The moon is a satellite of Earth. -It takes one month (28 days) for the moon to revolve once around Earth. -The moon and Earth rotate and revolve. -The light of the sun bounces off the moon toward Earth, allowing us to see the moon. -Phases are the lighted shape of the moon as seen from Earth. -New Moon is when the moon is in between the Earth and the sun and we cannot see it from Earth. -Full moon is when the whole moon is lighted and Earth is in between the moon and the sun. -Crescent moon is when a banana shape is lighted.
