Mission
To educate students to be self-directed learners, collaborative workers, complex thinkers, quality producers,
and community contributors
Course Description
Food Science is the study of the physical and chemical characteristics of food. The course focuses
on nutrition, health, food processing, and preparation. The scientific method and lab experiments
are used to study all aspects of food. Students will be studying science by using materials that have
direct application to their daily lives. This course is recommended for students interested in areas
of food technology, food science and research, athletic nutrition, dietetics, chemistry, and
biochemistry. Food science may be used for a science credit
Course Learning Standards
Standard 1: Sensory Perception; how food stimulates senses and influences food choices (14%)
Standard 2: Water; the nature of water and its effects in digesting and cooking (14%)
Standard 3: Carbohydrates; simple and complex carbohydrates and sugar alcohols
– function in cooking and daily diet (28%)
Standard 4: Proteins; properties of amino acids and peptide bonds, and enzymes as protein catalysts
as they function in human nutrition and food preparation (15%)
Standard 5: Lipids; the chemical properties of lipids and application in food preparation (14%)
Standard 6: Chemistry Basics; acids and bases, solutions, and physical vs. chemical changes
and applications to food preparation (15%)

Reassessment Policy
Retake Policy (retakes are only on summative work, excluding final exams):
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Students are only allowed retakes on unit tests on which they receive a 79% or below.
The maximum grade the student can get on the retake is an 80%.
The higher of the two scores will be entered in Infinite Campus
The retake times and locations are left up to the individual teacher.
Students are required to do an alternative study guide prior to the retake which they must turn in to
their teacher the day of the retake.
Communication
•
•
Teachers make every effort to respond to emails and phone calls within 48 hours during the work week.
The best way to communicate with teachers is through email; however, if you haven’t received a
response in 48 hours, please resend the email or call their voicemail. Your email may have gone into the
spam folder.
Help
• Make an appointment with your teacher.
• Attend S.O.S (supervised open study) in the Literacy Center M, W & Th from 3:15 to 4:15.
• Drop in for peer tutor during lunch periods or before school through the Literacy Center.
Parents or Guardians
We need your help!
• Parents should actively check Infinite Campus for their students grade.
o The grades on Infinite Campus will be accurate only at Mid-Quarter and Quarter. Prior to
those dates, the grade reflected is fluid.
o Infinite Campus is a communication tool until final grade is posted.
• Please ask your student about their school work
• Check with your individual teacher for classroom procedures, schedules, and daily class news.
