BrainPop: Darwin and Natural Selection
1831 Charles Darwin sailed on the HMS Beagle for 5 years, visited Galapagos Islands
(west coast of S. America)
Discovered unique species of finches, mockingbirds, tortoises and other animals on each
island
Unique traits to match the unique environments on the islands
Determined that they must have all developed from a common ancestor
*There is always competition for resources which creates environmental pressures
*Variations (differences) in populations
*Caused by mutations (mistakes when DNA is copied) which can sometimes be
passed on to offspring
*Can be good (help the organisms survive)
*bad (hurt chances of survival)
*neutral (no effect on survival)
“survival of the fittest”
Takes millions of years
All life is connected
Lamarck – before Darwin, traits obtained during an organism’s lifetime could be passed
on to the next generation
Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection disproves Lamarck
On the Origin of Species… published in 1859
