Unit 6 Objectives
Chapter 4

Understand the basic tenets of the cell theory

Understand the implications of how the surface-to-volume ratio constrains
cell size

Contrast the general features of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells

Be able to distinguish the organelles and structures typical of eukaryotic
plant and animal cells

Describe the nucleus of eukaryotes with respect to structure and function

Describe the organelles associated with the endomembrane system, and tell
the general function of each

List several surface structures of cells and tell how they help cells survive

Describe the cytoskeleton of eukaryotes and distinguish it from the
endomembrane system

Discuss the various mechanisms that enable a cell to move
Chapter 5

Understand the essential structure and function of the plasma membrane

Familiarize yourself with the main membrane proteins and their functions in
a cell

Know the forces that cause water and solutes to move across membranes
passively (without energy)

Distinguish between substances that move by simple diffusion and by
facilitated diffusion

Know the mechanisms by which substances are moved across membranes
against a concentration gradient

Understand the importance of osmosis to all cells including hypo-, hyper- ,
and isotonic solutions

Understand how material can be imported into or exported from a cell by
being wrapped in membranes
