Energy is all around us….
Forms of Energy
Junior Science
Forms of Energy
…it can take many forms.
The five main forms of
energy include:
 Heat
 Chemical
 Electromagnetic
 Nuclear
 Mechanical
Potential Energy
All Energy can be classified as
being either…
Stored Energy (Potential Energy)
Energy in Action (Kinetic Energy)
The stored energy in a body due
to its position or shape.
An objects has potential energy
because a force has moved or
changed it in someway.
When an object releases its
stored energy it is
converted into another form
of energy

Kinetic Energy
Energy can
converts from one
Kinetic Energy is the energy
found in moving objects.
form to another
And....
it can also spread
out until it is not
noticed any more.
The more kinetic energy an
object has the faster it moves.
Sound
When an object slows
down its kinetic energy is
converted into another type

What is Thermal Energy?
Heat Energy
Chemical Energy
Heat energy
The heat energy of an object
determines how active its atoms
are.
A hot object is one whose atoms and
molecules are excited and show rapid
movement.
A cooler object's molecules and
atoms will show less movement.

What is Chemical Energy?
What is Electromagnetic Energy?
Light energy
Energy that is available
for release from chemical
reactions.
o Includes
energy from
gamma rays, xrays,
ultraviolet rays, visible
light, infrared rays,
microwave and radio
bands
The chemical bonds in a
matchstick store energy
that is transformed into
thermal energy when the
match is struck.
Electrical Energy
What is Electrical Energy?
Energy caused by the
movement of electrons
Electrical energy is
easily transported
through power lines
and converted into
other forms of energy
Mechanical Energy
What is Mechanical Energy?
Energy due to a object’s
motion (kinetic) or position
(potential).
The bowling ball has
mechanical energy.
When the ball strikes the
pins, mechanical energy is
transferred to the pins!

Examples of Mechanical Energy
Class Challenge
Draw a flow map showing the flow of energy transformations
in a car from starting vehicle to driving.
Target 5 energy changes
Hint: The Primary Energy source is the battery.
