Types of Energy
1. potential energy – the energy stored in an object or material
2. kinetic energy – the energy of a moving object
3. mechanical energy – energy due to an object’s motion (which is kinetic energy) or
an object’s position (which is potential energy)
4. electromagnetic energy – light energy; the energy caused by the waves of light
5. electrical energy – energy caused by the movement of electrons
6. chemical energy – energy that is available for release from a chemical reaction
7. sound energy – energy caused by an object’s vibration transmitted through the air
8. thermal energy – heat energy; the heat energy of an object determines how active
the atoms are. Hot objects have rapid moving molecules.
9. nuclear energy – the energy that comes from changes in the nucleus of an atom
