History of Codeine
Codeine is one of the active ingredients
found in poppies, and was first isolated
in the 19th Century in France
Almost all cough syrups in the United
States that require a prescription
contain Codeine.
Medical use of
codeine
Codeine is a weak narcotic pain-reliever and cough
suppressant
Codeine increases tolerance to pain, decreasing
discomfort, but the pain still is apparent to the patient. In
addition to reducing pain, codeine also causes sedation
drowsiness and depresses breathing.
Facts
Codeine frequently is combined with other mild pain
relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or aspirin for
more effective pain relief.

Symptoms can vary in strength as well as interrupt your
ability to accomplish even the smallest of tasks.
Sleeplessness,uncontrollable muscle movements,
nausea, headaches, and moderate to severe muscle
aches and cramps.
Intense physical cravings for the drug, thoughts of
suicide or hurting others, psychosis, irritability, obsess
about getting the drug, easily agitated, racing thoughts,
and even hallucinations.
