Separatists
The Pilgrims (separatists) were
escaping religious persecution
under King James I
What’s the difference between
separatists and puritans?
Separatists: Extreme Puritans.
They wanted to completely
separate from the Church of
England.
◦ They believed that they had
been elected by God for
salvation
Puritans
Puritans believed that the Church of England was badly in need of reform.
But they thought it could be salvaged.

The Pilgrims (AKA Separatists)
In 1608, Separatists first move to
Holland, an area long known for
its toleration.
1620, they set out for a more
remote location that would allow
them to protect their community.

Mayflower Compact, 1620
With a partner, translate the Mayflower Compact into
today’s language, then answer the following questions:
1. How is the role of the church different in Plymouth than
it is in Jamestown?
2. Who controls creating and enforcing laws in Plymouth?
3. Who was the document created for?
4. What is the common theme throughout the document?
This day, before we came into harbor, observing some not well affected to unity and
concord, but gave some appearance of faction, it was thought good there should be an
association and agreement that we should combine together in one body, and to submit
to such government and governors as we should be common consent agree to make and
choose, and set our hands to this that follows word for word. In the name of God,
Amen. We whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign
lord, King James. . . . Having undertaken for the glory of God, and advancement of the
Christian faith and honor of our king and country, a voyage to plant the first colony in
the northern parts of Virginia, do by these present, solemnly and mutually, in the
presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a
civil body politic . . . ; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and
equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, offices from time to time as shall be thought
most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise
all due submission and obedience. . . .
Direct Democracy?
Sometimes called "pure
democracy”
A form of democracy in which
the people themselves, rather
than elected representatives,
determine the laws and policies
by which they are governed.
