• What is a lever?
• Answer: A lever is a simple machine consisting
of a plank and a fulcrum. When one end of
the plank is pushed down, the plank pivots on
the fulcrum, causing the other end of the
plank to rise.

• Answer: A lever can change the direction of
force and the amount of force, depending on
where the fulcrum, input force, and output
force are located.

• How can a lever be used in a system?
• Answer: A lever can be used in a system, such as
a compound machine, to transfer force. For
example, a pair of scissors has two levers and two
wedges. You apply force to the handles of the
scissors, and the levers turn around the pivot
point of the scissors. The output force of the
levers is applied to the wedges as they close
together to cut an object such as piece of paper.
