2014-2015 LCHS French 2 Syllabus Mme Olsen Course Description: The second level course continues the emphasis on the communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Written work emphasizes vocabulary development, semantics, syntax, and composition with special attention to use of primary verb tenses. Vocabulary is taught in context, practiced through multimedia, and reinforced with written exercises. Since the speech of people is so interwoven into their way of life, the student examines the customs and manners of the people. The following is a brief description of the themes to be covered: 1 SEMESTER 1 Semester 1 1st Quarter AP THEME: CONTEMPORARY LIFE TOPIC 1: LEISURE AND SPORTS Sports Leisure Vocabulary: Vocabulary for describing sports and leisure activities. Essential Structures: Form and placement of adverbs Form and use of the imparfait 4th Quarter AP THEME: CONTEMPORARY LIFE Mme Olsen's 2014 French 2 Syllabus - LCHS 3 TOPIC 1: HOUSING AND SHELTER: Home and Furnishings House and furnishings Rental Properties Vocabulary: House and furnishings vocabulary, Rental vocabulary Essential Structures: Uses of the passé composé and the imparfait TOPIC 2: HOUSING AND SHELTER: Chores and Home Appliances Chores Household appliances Household interiors Common expressions indicating past tense Vocabulary: Chores vocabulary, Household appliance vocabulary, Home interiors vocabulary Essential Structures: Uses of the passé composé and the imparfait Savoir and connaître Vivre YEAR-LONG THEME: LE MONDE FRANCOPHONE Grammar: There will be a review of grammar in contextualized format. Learning Expectations: Listening: Students will learn to distinguish more complex sound patterns in French, refine rhythm and intonation patterns, comprehend sentence length utterances by a variety of people, and assimilate acquired material and apply it to basic personal background and needs. Speaking: Students will refine and reinforce learned pronunciation patterns, combine and recombine previously learned elements in statements, questions, and answers; and initiate and sustain limited conversation. Reading: Students will enlarge vocabulary through the study of cognates, word families, synonyms, and antonyms; and read with increasing comprehension the materials essential for everyday living. Writing: Students will demonstrate good writing habits, write statements and formulate questions which will demonstrate comprehension of the present, past, and near future; vary Mme Olsen's 2014 French 2 Syllabus - LCHS 4 constructions, write guided paragraphs and dialogues in which they will incorporate preceding skills; and use previously learned vocabulary and structures to compose paragraphs on designated topics. Culture: Students will become aware of Franco-American similarities and differences and increase their knowledge of francophone countries. Grading will include but is not limited to the following: Formative Assessments will be taking place with 0% weight in grade calculation. Formative assessments help teacher, student and parents gauge readiness for summative assessments. Some examples are warm-ups & closing tasks, groupwork and homework. Homework will be assigned at the beginning of the week and will be due the following Monday or Tuesday. Homework is to be completed on-line and submitted through VISION. If a student does not have access to the internet at home; he (or she) is to plan get their homework done in the school computer lab or library during Raider Rally. Summative: 100% - essays, CPAs (Communicative Performance Assessments), oral presentations, projects, unit tests, quizzes, classwork, journals, debates, skits. Late work on summative assessments will be accepted with a 10% grade deduction for each class day delay for up to 3 classes. Grade will then go to an F if work is not turned in the following class. Mme Olsen's 2014 French 2 Syllabus - LCHS 5 Supplies One 3 ring binder with 5 dividers labeled: - Lesson Objective and Closing Task - Vocabulary and Grammar Notes - In-class Work - Essays and Journaling - Graded Assignments #2 pencil - 2 Highlighter - 1 loose leaf paper - 1 pack French/English Dictionary - A pocket dictionary is fine. Classroom expectations Work hard in class = a lot less work at home Participate and take notes Be respectful of yourself and others Have a good attitude and do your best Utilize classroom time wisely No cellphone use during Mrs. Olsen's class. If a student uses a cellphone during classtime; it will be confiscated and a parent will need to pick it up at the front office. Use of cellphone during any graded assignment = an automatic F Talking during quizzes or tests before everyone is finished = an automatic F. Please raise your hand if you have a question during a quiz/test. Expect to work in groups often and IN FRENCH Expect use of technology Mme Olsen's 2014 French 2 Syllabus - LCHS 6 No pop quizzes. All graded work will be announced in advance in class and on website. Expect a minimum of 6 summative grades per quarter with several formative assignments leading up to the summative work.
