This commemorative day, aligned with Victory in Japan (VJ) Day, is depicted by the iconic Sailor Kissing the Nurse in Times Square featured on the cover of Life Magazine, August 1945. In 2013, Oregon was the first state to legislate an annual permanent Spirit of ‘45 Day on the 2nd Sunday of every August and is celebrated statewide.
