In 2010, Congress passed legislation to commemorate the 2nd Sunday of August as “Spirit of ’45 Day” to honor
and remember the contributions, values and legacy of the men and women of WWII who served our country,
both in battle abroad and at home. This commemorative day, aligned with Victory in Japan (VJ) Day, is depicted
by the iconic Sailor Kissing the Nurse in Times Square featured on the cover of Life Magazine, August 1945.
In 2013, Oregon was the first state to legislate an annual permanent Spirit of ‘45 Day on the 2nd Sunday of
every August and is celebrated statewide. Over 150,000 Oregonians served … more than 7,000 lost their lives.
In 2020, during the WWII 75th Anniversary Spirit of ‘45 Commemorative Week Aug 9-15, America will honor the
achievements and virtues of men and women of this incredible generation by displaying a banner of the photos
collected by all states—stretching the 2-mile-long mall from The Nation's Capital steps to the Lincoln Memorial,
and back to the reflecting pool of the National World War II Memorial.
