Cell Cycle
Introduction
Cell division and replication
Warm-up Questions:
• How are the products of photosynthesis used in cellular
respiration?
• What is the cells main form of energy?
The Cell Cycle
The cell cycle is the daily life and
reproduction of the cell.
Mitosis is the act of the cell
duplicating its DNA and
separating into two identical
cells.
Interphase
O Cells spend most of their
life in Interphase.
O The cell obtains nutrients
and performs normal cell
activities.
O The cell reads its DNA.
Prophase
O Nuclear envelope disappears
during prophase.
O Mitotic spindles form.
O Chromosomes become more
coiled and visible through light
microscope.
Metaphase
O Chromosomes align along the
center of the cell.
O Chromosomes are in their
most condensed stage.
O Preparing for division.
Anaphase
O Chromosomes split and sister
chromatids move to opposite poles.
O Only accounts for about 1% of cells
time.
Telophase
O Final phase.
O Cell separates into two sister cells.
O Cytokinesis is the physical process of the
cell separating.
