Alfred Wegener was a German geologist but he also
worked with meteorology and climatology
 This related to his discoveries because weather impacted
geology by weathering down land forms and the weather
temperature, like the sun and snow.
 He also originated the
theory of Pangaea
 Pangaea happened during
carboniferous period which
was 300,000,000 years ago

Alfred Wegener
Pangaea means ‘all lands’ , was the supercontinent that existed 300
million years ago.





Arthur Holmes elaborated on the idea that the mantel
undergoes thermal convection.
His ideas later assisted in the recognition of Wegener’s
theory.
Then theory of continental drift & ‘super continent’
occurred.
However the theory of a ‘super continent’ originally was
not accepted by scientists.
Continental drift was being discussed during the time
Wegener introduced his Pangaea theory.

There are 3 primary types of Tectonic
Plate boundaries.
 A plate is two sub-layers of the earth's
crust (lithosphere) that move, float, and
sometimes fracture.
 The different types of Tectonic Plate
Boundaries are the Divergent,
Convergent, and Transform boundary.

The idea of boundaries.
A divergent boundaries are basically
when plates move away from each other
forming oceanic valleys or ridges
 Divergent boundaries can cause
earthquakes, volcanoes and trenches.
 An example of a divergent boundary is
the East Africa Rift Valley.

Divergent

Boundaries - Divergent
Volcano- landform where molten rock the surface of the planet.
Trench- a long steep-sided depression in the ocean floor
Volcano^
Trench^
Earthquake^
Plates that are moving in opposite
directions meet and one is dragged down
under the other.
 Plates moving in opposite directions meet
and one is dragged down.
 Hazards caused by Convergent
boundaries are Earthquakes &
Volcanoes.

Convergent Boundary
A transform boundary is when one plate
moves horizontally past another plate.
 example is the earthquake-prone San
Andreas fault zone of California, which
marks the boundary between the Pacific
and North American Plates

Transform Boundary
Mountain - a section of land that is well
above its surrounding grounds.
 Landslides – The downward sliding of a
relatively dry mass of earth and rock.
 Mudslides - a landslide that consists of
mud.
