 Eastern Europe has many

broad plains and high
mountains.
Balkan Peninsula-most
mountains
Carpathian Mountains run
down the center of Eastern
Europe
The Great Hungarian Plains
run in between mountain
ranges
Physical features were shaped
by the ice age
Climate
 Climate varies in Eastern
Europe especially in the
North and South in the
south, mainly the Balkan
Peninsula the climate is
subtropical
 Summers are dry and
winters are rainy
 In the North temperatures
are often colder
Agriculture
 South has a longer growing
season than the North
 The mountainous regions in
the North make it hard to
grow agriculture on a large
scale.
 Many farmers in the south
use mechanized farming or
farming using machines
Natural Resources and the
Environment
 The location of Eastern




European factories depends on
the location of natural
resources.
Industry has grown in areas of
Poland where coal can be found.
Steel is an important industrial
product of the Ukraine.
Oil and Gas is mostly imported
from Russia
Chernobyl nuclear plant in
Ukraine exploded in 1986
 Winds spread radioactive
pollution over a huge area of
Europe.
 The area is still contaminated
today.
 Acid Rain from all of the
industrial production causes
pollution for Eastern Europe.
 Many of these countries want to
join the EU but they must make
power plants cleaner and more
efficient.
Religious Diversity
 Christianity is the dominant
religion
-(Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, and
Roman Catholic)
 Muslims- largest groups of nonChristians
 Revival of Jewish population in
Eastern Europe
 Under Soviet Union communism,
religion was not allowed to be
practiced.
 Today religious life has become
more active but there are still
citizens with no religious affiliation.
