The Cold War began after World War II as
former Allies became distrustful of each
other.
Differences in political and economic
philosophies formed the basis of this war
without fighting.


Ties between Eastern and Western Europe
were cut and travel by Eastern Europeans to
the West was forbidden.
Winston Churchill described the line of
separation as an "iron curtain" descending
across the continent.


In 1947, President Truman announced an
economic and military aid program designed
to help people resist Communist aggression.
Aimed chiefly at Greece and Turkey, it was
successful in saving these countries from
Communist threats.


communism and to “contain” it to where it
already existed

Western European nations to help them
rebuild their war-torn economies.
