HW: Complete paragraph analysis of persuasion in
advertising
Obj: to explain use of rhetoric in advertising
First Key Quote – Break it down into pieces
[Mark Antony’s] Servant
Thus, Brutus, did my master bid me kneel:
Thus did Mark Antony bid me fall down;
And, being prostrate, thus he bade me say:
Brutus is noble, wise, valiant, and honest;
Caesar was mighty, bold, royal, and loving:
Say I love Brutus, and I honour him;
Say I fear'd Caesar, honour'd him and loved him.
If Brutus will vouchsafe that Antony
May safely come to him, and be resolved
How Caesar hath deserved to lie in death,
Mark Antony shall not love Caesar dead
So well as Brutus living; but will follow
The fortunes and affairs of noble Brutus
Thorough the hazards of this untrod state
With all true faith. So says my master Antony.

Just like “MVP”
“Try it. It
works for
Kobe.”
“3 championships
and counting…”
Advertising Analysis



Now that we have talked about ethos, pathos &
logos, analyze your piece of advertising.
Identify which of the 3 rhetorical appeals are
used.
Write a one paragraph description, explaining
the advertiser’s audience, goals and techniques.
Paragraph Analysis
This advertisement for Vitamin Water is clearly targeted to
basketball fans. More specifically, their use of Kobe Bryant
will attract a younger audience. They are attempting to
persuade young fans to drink Vitamin Water – probably
instead of Gatorade. Their slogan implies that Kobe is
successful because he drinks Vitamin Water. If you drink
Vitamin Water, you too can win NBA championships. By using
such a successful athlete, they are appealing to ethos. Kobe
has credibility since he has already won 3 NBA
championships. A rookie or an unknown player would not
have the same credibility or ethos. There is also an element
of logos. Since it works for Kobe, it will work for you too.
Logically, anyone would want to be as successful as Kobe,
right?

Mark Antony’s opening speech
Antony’s Big Speech
O, pardon me, thou bleeding piece of earth,
That I am meek and gentle with these butchers!
Thou art the ruins of the noblest man
That ever lived in the tide of times.
Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood!
Over thy wounds now do I prophesy,-Which, like dumb mouths, do ope their ruby lips,
To beg the voice and utterance of my tongue—
A curse shall light upon the limbs of men;
Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
Shall cumber all the parts of Italy;

AUDIENCE and PURPOSE


Audience: Those toward whom your work
is targeted; your anticipated readers.
Purpose: Your reason for writing (to
persuade ______ to do _______.)
This sounds simple, but never underestimate
the importance of knowing your audience and
purpose at all times when you write!
THEREFORE…


You MUST keep your audience in mind
and make sure your writing is readable!
This means…





Correct spelling and readable format (12pt. Font,
double spaced, etc)
Interesting opening
Explanation of unfamiliar terms
Inclusion of a REASON for reading. WHY should the
reader (ME) even care?
Thinking about what might “get” your particular
audience.
YOUR TURN
Write a five-paragraph essay to try to persuade
me (your teacher) to never give homework
again. Use at least one example of each of the
rhetorical appeals and underline your examples.
Make sure you consider me (your audience) as
you write!
Include a rebuttal paragraph as your conclusion.
Rebuttal



A paragraph in which the writer anticipates and
refutes the opposition’s arguments.
This MUST be done intelligently and non
offensively
If done well, a good rebuttal is often the most
persuasive tool you can use, and is therefore,
usually the last paragraph
LEAVE YOUR AUDIENCE
UNABLE TO ARGUE BACK!!!
HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO ARGUE THE TEACHER!!! REFUTE EACH
OF THE FOLLOWING ARGUMENTS THAT SUPPORT HOMEWORK!
1. Homework reinforces the day’s lesson by providing extra
practice.
2. Homework provides feedback for the teacher on how
well students have learned.
3. Homework helps “get through” the curriculum faster,
especially when it comes to reading long novels.
4. Homework teaches responsibility and time management
skills, and prepares students for the demands of college
and work life.
Now, combine these arguments into a
rebuttal paragraph. I started it for you.
Although teachers have noble reasons
for assigning homework, students are
probably not getting as much out of it as
teachers think. One reason teachers
assign homework is to ********.
However…
