What is it?

How would you define socialization?

Who is involved?

How does it relate to society?
Slang terms of YOUR generation…
Definition:

Socialization- learning how to participate
in group life

What would we be like without it?


Boring, isolated, chaotic, extreme introvert,
animalistic…
Socialization is part of personality
formation!

We consider most actions to be natural
and “normal”

THAT’S NOT THE CASE!!
Nearly ALL aspects of social life are learned
I.E. walking patterns
*United States VS traditional India

When does socialization begin?
 AT

When does socialization end?
 AT

BIRTH
DEATH
The most important and critical time for
socialization =
 Early
years (approx. 0 to 5)
 Walking, talking, loving
Monkeys and Socialization
The Experiment:

Early 1960s

Conducted by psychologist Harry Harlow

It showed the negative effects of social
isolation on monkeys

Details of the experiment:
The monkeys were removed from their
mothers at birth and given two options; a fake
wire monkey or a fake cloth monkey.
 Even though the wire monkey was the only
source of food the baby monkeys went to the
soft and warm cloth monkey.
 The monkeys growing up with the wire mother
were psychologically stressed and withdrawn.

How does Harlow’s experiment
relate to humans?

Can we even compare the results to
humans?

YES!
Human example= isolated (or feral) children
1) Anna- forced to live in a small room until age
5 and she only was given milk to drink
2) Isabelle- hidden with her unwed mother (the
mother was deaf) in a dark room until
Isabelle was 6 years old.
What difference does the mother make?


ISOLATED CHILDREN ARE ABUSED
BOTH EMOTIONALLY AND SOCIALLY.

It is hard to ever recover after missing
the early years of socializationespecially if you were isolated by
yourself.

These kids may have otherwise led
very normal lives…
Socialization and the Self

What is the self?

Made up of two parts…
1. “me”= the part created through socialization
 2. “I”= the part that accounts for unlearned,
spontaneous acts

“I” want to steal a piece of your candy but lets
check with “me” first…
Socialization and the Self cont…

Keep this in mind: Socialization involves
indirect reinforcement through modeling.

Self-concept- your image of yourself as
having an identity separate from others

What is your self-concept?

Take a minute to write down several (4-5)
sentences about yourself. NO PHYSICAL
FEATURES! Values, attitudes, beliefs,
personality, hobbies, or interests…

Looking-glass self- a self concept based
on our idea of others’ judgment of us

How does this work?
1. perception
 2. interpret the perception
 3. response

IN OTHER WORDS: Other people and society
are your mirror and that’s how you shape your
personality.

similar interests
