The Crusades
The Crusades were wars in which the Christians of
Europe fought against the Muslims for the control of the
Holy land.
It was another example as to how much influence the
Church had over people of the Middle Ages
Pope Urban II called for the 1st Crusade in 1095 and told
Knights that their sins would be forgiven and they would
find paradise if they went on a crusade to free the holy
land.
Even before the 1st military crusade, ordinary people, in
what was called the People’s Crusade, flocked to the
Middle East to fight the Muslims.
Although there were Christian successes such as the 1st
Crusade, the Muslims eventually beat and drove out the
Christians from the Mid East.
When Christians returned to Europe they brought back
with them some of the knowledge that they had gained
from the scholarly Muslims regarding medicine,
astronomy, philosophy, mathematics and literature.
