Spelling lists
Information for Parents/Carers
These lists of words have been chosen from the new National Curriculum. Once a week your child will bring home a list of words to
learn for a test the following week. Please spend a few minutes each day with them, going through the words so that they know how
to spell them by the time of the test.
For some children, it may be appropriate for them to learn words from a higher or lower year group if those word lists are more
suitable. If this is the case for your child, please do not worry that they are behind, but help them with the words that they need to
learn. With your support and with regular practice they will improve.
Please keep this list safe so that you know what words your child has each week. This information will also be available to
download on the school website in case you lose this sheet.
When helping your child learn their spelling it is important that they learn the spelling rule as well as the words themselves so that
they can apply the rule to other words. Children will record their spelling scores in their homework book so that you can keep a
check on how they are doing.
Spelling activities
Here are some ideas to help your child learn his/her spellings:









Use the LOOK, COVER, WRITE CHECK approach to practice the spellings
Look for words within words
Put the words into sentences
Practice handwriting by writing out the spellings
Identify words in reading books with the same/similar patterns
Make word cards and stick them around the house
Make a word search using your spellings
Air spelling – using your index finger, write the word slowly in the air saying each letter as you ‘write’ it
Missing letters – mums and dads write out the spellings with some letters missing. Children try to fill in the missing
letters.
