Biochemistry of Metabolism
Target Audience
Those wishing to pursue postgraduate courses and careers in Biomedical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Nutrition,
Dietetics and other Health Professions
Overview
This course begins with a basic overview of essential chemistry to provide the necessary underpinning for the
study of biochemistry and metabolism. Students will consider key concepts including: organic and inorganic
chemistry, oxidation and reduction, acids and buffers, free radicals, biological molecules and enzymes.
Content
Students will then build up their understanding of metabolic pathways by learning to identify and describe core
concepts such as the function of vitamins as coenzymes in metabolism. This is followed by an overview of
protein, fat, carbohydrate and alcohol metabolism with an emphasis on the metabolic integration of these
macronutrients. The regulation of metabolic pathways will be considered in the response of metabolism to fed
and fasting states, starvation and physical exercise. Examples of the metabolic dysfunction in disease will also be
studied.
Key Areas
Protein metabolism
Fat metabolism
Carbohydrate metabolism
Alcohol metabolism
Course Duration: 3 Days (9:30am -4:30pm)
