Plants
What are plant characteristics?
 Multicellular
 Eukaryotic
 Autotrophic
Living on land
For plants to move onto land they had to prevent water loss and
reproduce outside of the water.
Cuticle=waxy covering that prevents water loss
Spores and seeds=structures that protect the reproductive cells from
drying out
Vascular tissue= tubes that can transport water and photosynthetic
material throughout the plant
Nonvascular and Vascular Plants
Nonvascular Plants—
 Do not have vascular tissue, roots, leaves or stems
 Small and live near water.
 Mosses
Vascular Plants —




Have vascular tissue which allow plant to grow taller
Can live further away from water
Spores, or seeds
Ferns, trees, flowering plants

Parts of a plant
Leaves—capture light & carry out photosynthesis
Stomata—exchange CO2 and O2
Stem—support leaves, carry food and water
Root—anchor, and absorb water and nutrients
Xylem—transports water
Phloem—transports food
Leaf
Stems
Roots
Seed Plants
Vascular and reproduce with seeds
Seed—Young plant with food and protective covering
Types
Gymnosperms—Naked seeds—pine trees
Angiosperms—produce flowers and enclose seeds in a fruit
