Communism vs. Capitalism in the Cold War and After
Goal:
1. It is your job to create two pieces of propaganda (video(s) and/or poster(s).
Past and Present:
1. One piece of propaganda needs to focus on condoning or condemning communism or
capitalism during the Cold War.
2. A second piece of propaganda needs to represent the positives or the negatives of
capitalism in America today.
Definitions (please click on the term(s) to understand the difference):
1. Capitalism
2. Communism
Keep in Mind:
We tend to forget that there are two sides to every story. Americans feel capitalism is
absolute and fundamental to establishing a true modern day economy and government.
I’m sure the Soviet Union felt the exact opposite. Keep in mind, if capitalism is so great,
why are so many people suffering in the United States right now! Feel free to take a
different perspective on this topic, although you reside in the U.S.
Directions:
1. There can be only two people to a group.
2. The poster(s) and/or the video(s) need to clearly represent the stance you have chosen
for the project.
3. Don’t forget, you need two pieces of propaganda representing the past and the
present.
Grading: (60pts-30 for each)
1. Creativity/originality = 15 *2 = 30pts
2. Meaningful message and understandable = 15 * 2 = 30pts
3. Your poster(s) and/or video(s) must be APPROPRIATE!
Bonus:
1. Whoever has the best propaganda, will receive 10 bonus points. The class will vote,
and, in the case of a tie, I will cast the deciding vote.
Supplies:
1. Poster: one sheet of poster board will be provided.
2. Video: you will need to provide your own videotape and video camera.
3. Bring your own supplies to class such as: scissors, colors, stencils, glue, props, etc.
4. Look in your book, library books, or the internet for ideas when creating your posters
and/or video(s).
