BODY STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION-- LPN 1104
Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements
Philosophy: This course is a study of basic anatomy and physiology of the human body
and all its systems. Each unit in this course is designed to include the study of major
parts in the specific system of the body and interlocks the dependency of one system upon
another with contributions of each system to the well being of the body as a whole.
This course also begins the application of anatomy and physiology facts to the nursing
process and its relationship to medical surgical nursing. Emphasis is placed upon the
assimilation of information with the beginning stages of cognitive deduction as it relates to
medical-surgical nursing. Lab values and diagnostic testing parameters are introduced in this
course.
Body structure and function is an important part of nursing education. In order to
recognize deviations from the normal, the nurse must first be familiar with the normal.
This course primarily focuses on normal body structure and function. Many examples
are mentioned in lecture that illustrate deviations from the normal with a natural
progression into medical-surgical nursing Without this knowledge, the nurse cannot
recognize and understand the patient needs or assist the patient to meet needs caused by a
deviation of body structure and function.
Instructor Objectives: The instructor’s teaching techniques should ensure that the
students are able to:
 Identify and name the major anatomical parts of each body system.
 Describe the physiological functioning of the body structures and systems.
 Relate information about how systems are interrelated to maintain the body as a
whole.
 Recognize the locations of each organ system, anatomical positions, and major
regions, cavities, and planes.
 Begin to make application of the nursing process into body structure and function.
 Notice anticipated changes in the body structure and it’s function throughout the
lifespan.
 Be aware of the impact that cultural viewpoint has on body perception.
 Make application of critical thinking skills to body structure and function.
Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be followed by all instructors
teaching this course (online and in the traditional setting).
 It is not necessary to cover all chapters in the book. However, the following
chapters must be covered by all instructors: chapters 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,
13, 14, 15 and 16. It is not necessary to cover these chapters in order. They can be
covered in whatever order the instructor chooses as long as they are covered in the
course of the semester.
 The final exam must have a comprehensive component, must count for at least 1/3
of the course grade and must be proctored.
Assessment Responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course (online and traditional)
will be expected to participate in assessment activities as dictated by the division. You
will be given further information/instructions by the lead instructor during the term
assessments are to be completed.
