Mercenary: a professional soldier hired to fight for
another country.
Marquis de Lafayette: French soldier, statesman, and
liberal leader, who served in the American
Revolutionary Army as an aide to General Washington

Battles of Saratoga: a turning point in the American
Revolutionary War because this victory for the patriots
convinced European countries to help the colonies in
the war.
Bayonets: long steel knives attached to the ends of
